Wichita County sits in IECC Climate Zone 3B — the hot-dry zone — as classified by the U.S. Department of Energy and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and adopted in the Texas energy code. That isn’t a technicality. Zone 3B means long, punishing cooling seasons: Wichita Falls averages about 30 days a year at or above 100°F, and the all-time record high sits near 117°F. Your house spends months trying to keep triple-digit heat out, and the attic is where it loses that fight first — attic air on a summer afternoon can run far hotter than the outdoor temperature, sitting like a lid of heat right above your ceiling.
Here’s the distinction that most homeowners never get told. There are two ways heat and comfort leak out of a house: conduction (heat soaking through solid materials) and air movement (hot air physically flowing in through gaps). Fiberglass batts only address the first one, and only when they’re installed perfectly and nothing is blowing through them. Spray foam addresses both at once — it insulates and seals the air leaks in a single application, which is exactly what a hot, windy climate demands.
The ENERGY STAR program is direct about this: a typical homeowner can save around 15% on heating and cooling costs by sealing air leaks and adding insulation in the attic, floors, and crawl space. That matters enormously in our zone, because in the average U.S. home, space heating plus air conditioning already make up more than half — about 52% — of total energy use. When more than half your energy bill is climate control, and you live where it’s 100°F for a month straight, sealing the envelope is the single biggest lever you have.

A common, effective approach in our climate is to convert the attic to a sealed, conditioned space by foaming the underside of the roof deck — bringing the whole attic inside the building envelope so the ductwork and equipment up there are no longer sitting in 130°F air. For our climate zone, ENERGY STAR recommends attic insulation in the R-49 range for an uninsulated attic (and adding up toward that if you’re partially insulated). But R-value alone is misleading in a windy climate. A deep, fluffy R-49 of batt that the wind blows through doesn’t perform at R-49 — air moving through insulation strips heat right out of it. That’s the whole reason we lead with air sealing: seal the leaks first so the R-value you install actually delivers what it’s rated for. Air sealing and insulation is the ENERGY STAR recommendation, not one instead of the other.
Every attic is a little different, but the sequence is consistent. We start by walking the space and finding where the air is actually moving — the penetrations, the hatch, the top plates, the can lights, the chases. We talk through whether we’re sealing the ceiling plane or converting to a sealed roofline, and which foam fits. If old, air-fouled batt or blown insulation is in the way of doing it right, we discuss removing it. Then we protect the space, mix and apply the foam at the correct ratio and thickness, and respect the re-occupancy and ventilation window while it cures. We finish by walking you through what changed and, if we’ve tightened the house significantly, whether planned ventilation makes sense so you get controlled fresh air instead of random leakage.
Spray foam is a genuinely excellent product in the right place, and we’re not going to pretend it’s magic. It won’t fix an undersized or failing air conditioner, and a house that’s tightened up needs to be tightened up thoughtfully, with ventilation considered. What foam does extremely well is stop the air-and-heat leakage that batts can’t — and in a Zone 3B, 10 to 12 mph-average-wind climate like ours, that’s usually the biggest thing standing between you and a comfortable, affordable-to-cool house.
